Frequently Asked Questions

Q0. Why is it showing the same puzzle for several days now?

Our website shows a different puzzle each day. However, some service providers (AOL in particular) try to save bandwidth by caching websites. In other words, they are showing you the snapshot of our website that they took several days ago. Press F5 to tell your browser to ignore the cache and fetch the current page. If the problem persists, ask your ISP tech suppoprt for browser settings to avoid this problem in the future.

Q1. What are the rules for this puzzle?

There is only one rule: Every row, column and zone of 3x3 cells must contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once.

Q2. Can I use both mouse and keyboard to solve the puzzle?

Mostly. You will need to use the mouse to select the first cell in the puzzle. Then you can use the up, down, left and right keys to move to another cell, or click on it to jump directly to it.

You will need to use the keyboard to actually enter a digit.

Handy Tip: You can click-and-hold on any solved cell to highlight all other cells with the same digit. The highlighting lasts until you lift your finger up. This is very useful for spotting where a digit should be. For example, you may have found 7 of the 9 "fours" in the puzzle. Click-and-hold on any one of them to highlight them all - this will help you spot where the "missing" ones should go.

Q3. Can I print your puzzle and solve it on paper?

Yes. Click on the "Printer-Friendly" link above the puzzle. This will open a simplified version of the page in a new window. Use the browser's Print function to print this page.

Q4a. I think the puzzle has an error and cannot be solved.

Q4b. I think the puzzle has more than one solution.

Respectfully, I must assure that you are wrong. All the puzzles appearing on this site are from a reliable source (www.numberpuzzles.com) who take pains to ensure that there is only one answer, and that the puzzle can be solved using logic alone, without the need to guess.

The most likely explanation is a logic error on your part, especially if you are solving it with pen and paper, because a mistaken entry can cause you to make a whole series of false moves. Try solving it online - the puzzle will beep at the first error, and put you back on the right road.

If you are stuck on moving forward, try the excellent tutorial at www.sudoku.com/howtosolve.htm.

Q5. It seems like I need to guess. Is that right?

No. These puzzles can always be solved without guessing. Use the highlighting trick shown in #2 for clues.

If you are still stuck, try the excellent tutorial at www.sudoku.com/howtosolve.htm.

Q6. I'm stuck. Can you help me?

Unfortunately, I cannot help individual players - there are not enough email minutes in the day!

My best advice is to keep trying. Use the highlighting trick shown in #2 for clues. If you are still stuck, try the excellent tutorial at www.sudoku.com/howtosolve.htm.

Q7. These are fun! Where can I get more?

You can do free sample puzzles at www.numberpuzzles.com. Or consider one of the items in our books link.

Q8. I run a website/newspaper/magazine that would like to include your sudoku puzzles.

Great! Our licence arrangement with our supplier prevents us from re-selling them, but they are no doubt willing to supply you on much the same terms. Please contact them here.

Q9. I love your site. Can I help keep it running by making a donation?

Thank you. Our plan is to keep it free for as long as we can. Web advertising pays so little that we decided replaced the advertisements with links to worthwhile charities. If you enjoy our puzzles, a small donation to offset our hosting and maintenance costs is always welcome. Please use the link here:
